Claims Coordinator Report

The Rongowhakaata claim (Wai 684) was heard by the Waitangi Tribunal
over a 2 year period and concluded in 2003. The Tribunal released its report on the Turanga grievances including those of Rongowhakaata in 2004. In addition to discussing the Turanga grievances, the report set out the Tribunal’s recommendations about how the Crown should redress the injury and loss suffered by Rongowhakaata and the other Turanga groups with a view to the Turanga groups including Rongowhakaata progressing to Negotiations with the Crown to reach a “full and final” settlement of the Rongowhakaata grievances.

Those grievances include:

• The Conflict at Waerenga a Hika;
• The exile of Rongowhakaata whanau to Wharekauri and their treatment while there and after they returned;
• The Confiscation and taking of Rongowhakaata land and resources;
• The confiscation of Te Hau ki Turanga; and
• Numerous other related grievances

The elected Rongowhakaata Negotiators, with the support of the Rongowhakaata Claims Committee and the Charitable Trust have been tasked with negotiating a settlement to the Rongowhakaata grievances. This will involve gathering and considering any and all relevant information, keeping the Rongowhakaata whanui informed and up to date, providing whanau with ample opportunities to engage and ensuring any proposed settlement is first taken to the people for iwi approval before any agreement is finalised.

Though there will be many issues and obstacles to be addressed and overcome, the end goal in all of this is to obtain a settlement for Rongowhakaata that will assist as much as possible to ensure that the future for the iwi is a vibrant and positive one in all respects, culturally, socially, spiritually and financially.
