RONGOWHAKAATA WANANGA SERIES
1. In preparation for negotiations with the Crown,
the Rongowhakaata Negotiators and Claims Committee
are holding a series of wananga to inform Rongowhakaata
uri about the Direct Negotiations process in Turanga
and to ascertain what Rongowhakaata would like to
see included in the Rongowhakaata settlement package.
2. The first wananga was held at Whakato Marae on
Saturday 26 May 2007. At that wananga, whanau were
provided with information about the negotiations process
and the Crown approach to dealing with settlement
redress. The Rongowhakaata “wish list”
of redress to be sought in the Rongowhakaata settlement
package was started through direct consultation with
the whanau who attended. Information and presentations
from the first wananga will soon be available on the
Rongowhakaata website.
3. The second wananga which focussed on ‘cultural
redress’ was held at Ohaka Marae on Saturday
29 September 2007. The purpose of that wananga was
to identify and discuss the Rongowhakaata taonga to
be addressed in the Rongowhakaata settlement, the
ways the Crown has typically dealt with cultural redress
in other settlements, the ways in which Rongowhakaata
would like to address our cultural redress and to
further develop the Rongowhakaata proposed settlement
package
4. The third wananga was held at Manutuke Marae on
Saturday 24 November 2007. That wananga related specifically
to the Rongowhakaata tipuna whare, Te Hau ki Turanga,
and sought to inform whanau about its history and
confiscation. Whanau discussed how Te Hau ki Turanga
and other taonga might be addressed as part of the
Rongowhakaata settlement. A proposal for further wananga,
research & consultation about what Rongowhakaata
will seek from the Crown with regard to the whare
and associated taonga will be circulated and presented
to the iwi for feedback early in the new year, 2008.
